Tóm tắt
Many researchers have confirmed the profound impact of extensive reading on students' English
language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing). Therefore, extensive reading and translation
competence are supposed to be interrelated. Our paper aimed to investigate the influence of
extensive reading on English-Vietnamese translation skills among English-majored students at Vinh
University. Seventy-four third-year students were divided into two groups: an experimental group
involved in extensive reading activities and a control group following a traditional class. A pretest and
a post-test assessed each group's translation skills. After a 14-week intervention, the results
showed that the experimental group improved their post-test scores considerably in their English-
Vietnamese translation compared to the control group. These suggested that extensive reading
positively influences translation skills and constitutes a valuable pedagogical tool in the English
language learning program to enhance the students' vocabulary acquisition, text understanding,
cultural immersion and linguistic transfer.
