Abstract:
Children with disabilities are a socially vulnerable group in need of special care, protection, and attention. Vietnam has implemented various policies to ensure the right to education for children with disabilities. However, practical experiences reveal that there are still significant barriers from families affecting the learning process of these children. Based on research conducted at the Vocational Education Center for People with Disabilities in Nghe An Province, this paper identifies the family-related barriers in the educational journey of children with disabilities at this educational institution. The paper highlights three main barriers. Firstly, Travel distances and the economic conditions of families, particularly those facing financial difficulties, impact the participation of children with disabilities in education. Secondly, parents may lack the necessary skills and methods to educate children with disabilities effectively. Thirdly, parents of children with disabilities often have lower expectations for their children's educational achievements and may not effectively collaborate with educational institutions in their children's learning process. Based on the recognition of these barriers, the paper suggests some solutions from a social work perspective to create more favorable conditions for the learning process of children with disabilities.
