THE ROLE OF THE VILLAGE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF EDUCATION AND CONFUCIAN CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATIONS IN VIETNAM FROM 15th CENTURY TO THE BEGINNING OF THE 20TH CENTURY

For more than eight centuries of Confucian education in Vietnam, many regions became renowned for their excellence in the Confucian court examination system. In that development, the village plays a significant role. In this article, we will discuss the policies of the village to present a case study of Quynh Doi village for encouraging education and examinations. Quynh Doi in the study is renowned for their learning tradition not only in Nghe An province but also nationwide. From the regulations in the Huong Convention to the existence of the Literature Association, Khoan Literature Association, Temple of Literature all demonstrated the respect for learning and promotion of learning pervaded the atmosphere of the village. As a result, the policies of the village contributed to the creation of traditional fondness for learning and the flow of Confucian court examination system of Nghe An province and of Vietnam during the medieval period.
