Vũ Hạnh (1926 - 2021) is a typical writer of modern Vietnamese literature. In the period 1955 - 1975, while in South Vietnam, especially in urban areas, literature deeply influenced philosophical thought, culture, Western and American literature, Vũ Hạnh along with some other writers choose their own directions, which is in contrast to the majority. They composed under the illumination of communist ideals, aiming to protect the nation's traditional culture against hybrid and ‘uprooted’ culture. Studying the case of Vũ Hạnh - a typical left-leaning writer, we aim to clarify the influence of cultural mechanisms and political power on his writings. From there, we want to demonstrate the multifaceted and vibrant nature that allows the coexistence of many styles and opposing creative ideas in urban literature in South Vietnam.
Vũ Hạnh, urban literature in South Vietnam, progressive patriotic literature, revolutionary literature, left-leaning.
