Ecosystem services are studied by using many different approaches and methods. Here we
present a community approach with a combination of fieldwork methods and sociological
surveys (questionnaire interviews and semi-structured interviews) in the assessment of
mangrove ecosystem services. There were 198 households in 8 communes in 3 coastal districts
of Nghe An province selected for the survey. We find that the basic mangrove ecosystem
service values in the locality have identified by communities, including 17 types of services
belonging to 4 groups: provisioning services, regulating services, supporting services and
cultural services. The recognition and use of ecosystem services vary by location and
occupation in the study area. The fishing group gives detailed information about the
provisioning services, in contrast, the shrimp farming and agricultural production groups are
interested in regulating and supporting services. According to space, mangroves in Quynh Luu
district are assessed to have the highest potential for ecosystem services, followed by Dien Chau
district, the lowest is Nghi Loc district. In addition to the potential for ecosystem services,
mangroves are facing many threats of decline, placing responsibilities on managers and people
in protecting and rationally using mangrove resources.
