This study was an attempt to describe the students’ problems when
studying in the Translation course at Vinh University. The study involved 54
third-year students majoring in English at Vinh University. To collect data, a
3-step Likert scale questionnaire, participants’ writings and group interviews
were used and triangulated. The findings showed that EFL students faced
three main challenges during their translating process, including limited
grammatical knowledge, lack of ESP vocabulary, and other problems relating
to culture, pragmatics and background knowledge. From the results, a number
of solutions were suggested in order to improve the translation competence of
English major students at the university level.
