An Investigation into the Impacts of Extensive Reading on EFL Students’ Speaking Performance
Abstract
This study attemps to examine the effectiveness of extensive reading on EFL students’ speaking performance. The study involved a group of 112 non-English majored students. A questionnaire was first distributed to find out the difficulties those students faced when learning speaking skill. The data revealed that the biggest obstacle for the participants in learning speaking skill is lack of necessary vocabulary and structure, which has prevented them from getting involved with the activities during the lessons and affects negatively their speaking performance. Then an experiment in which extensive reading was used as a supporting tool to enhance students’ speaking performance was conducted among 55 students in the experimental group while any supplementary materials were not assigned to the 57 other students to read ahead in the control group. A pre-test and a post-test were used in order to measure the difference between the results of the two classes. It was found that extensive reading had positive impacts on students’ speaking performance. Based on the findings, some pedagogical suggestions were also made for the purpose of having better result in the next step in the future.
