The Effectiveness of Reading Logs on Google Docs on EFL

The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly disrupted education systems in Vietnam and around the
world. During the lockdown, online classes by combining digital resources have replaced the face-to-face classrooms. Virtual
classrooms and online self-study materials have brought considerable impacts on teaching and learning processes. This study
attempts to investigate how reading logs on Google Docs influence first-year non-English majored students’ ability and
performance in reading. In order to determine whether those students who would do a lot of reading logs would be better in
reading skills and their motivartion in learning, firstly, the procedure of the activity is described with survey after one group of
40 first-year students as control group and 40 others as experimental group. Then, the results obtained were presented and
discussed. Finally, the findings indicated that the application of reading logs on Google Docs for reading skills considerable
increased the students’ learning motivation, the vocabulary and reading fluency. More significantly, it encourages student
autonomy as well as enhances different interaction patterns online include teacher-student, student-student, student-content
for EFL language development and online learning environment.
