Switching from a traditional teaching method to a competency-based education
enhancesthe role of learner autonomy profoundly. This paper analysesthe relationship
between this factor and learners’ listening competence. Learners, especially language
students, need to prioritize this characteristic to meet the requirements of 21st Century
learners. The participantsin thisresearch include 92 studentsfrom Foreign Languages
Department, Vinh University. The comparison between the placement test and the final
shows significant improvement in their listening skill. Besides, the results from the
questionnaire also foster the critical role of learners’ self- determination in listening
extensively. At the end of the paper, some practical suggestions are provided with the
hope to fan the flame of learners’ lifelong learning.
