Mind mapping is known as a wonderful solution for memory and creativity. For many decades from the day the famous author Tony Buzan created and developed mind maps, there have been had many more types of mind maps with various purposes to makes them promote all power. By reading the reference documents of many authors, I realize that, mind maps have been used from very early in Vietnam with many subjects and different fields. However, the way that people use mind maps do not really promote all the benefits that this technique brings. The research is aimed at finding the effective ways to use mind maps to teach vocabulary to students in general and to twenty-four first year non-English major students at Vinh University in particular. I am fully aware that most of my students have troubles with learning new words. They find it hard to remember and use words in specific situations. In my study, observation is conducted based on two criteria that are the understanding and engagement of students. Observation was conducted from the first session to the last session of the program. Besides, I semi-structured interview was applied at the end of the program. In addition, all mind maps made by students were be collected, assessed and then given comments. The results shows that using mind maps can helps students improve the memory of vocabulary items. In addition, after attending a lesson with mind maps students show their desire to have opportunity to learn with this technique. Last but not least, this article may be considered as a useful reference for teachers in English and ESL / EFL classrooms.
