Differences betwgeen Students’ and Teachers’ Perceptions of Effective English Teaching at Vinh University.

The present study attempts to identify the differences between students’ and teachers’ perceptions of effective English teaching at Vinh University. The data were collected through a five-point rating scale questionnaire containing three aspects: Organization and Assessment, Teacher’s Attributes, and Learning Environment. The study involved 190 non-English majored students and 22 English teachers in the survey and interviews at Vinh University. The findings indicated that students and teachers’ perceptions of effective English teaching at Vinh University are quite similar, but they are different in terms of degree of importance. The largest differences between teachers and students’ perceptions were found in terms of encouraging critical thinking, teachers perceived it much more important than students did. From the findings, many educational implications are put forward in order to improve English teaching situation at universities in Vietnam.
