Fostering students’ historical thinking and cognitive competencies is considered to be critical which can be grounded on the innovation of teachers' teaching methods. The article attempts to specify views of historical perceptions and thinking to offer teachers guidance on the use of music and documentaries in teaching Vietnamese history during the period 1954-1975 (grade 12 History) aimed at developing students’ historical thinking and cognitive competencies.
